The Importance of Letting Your Dog Sniff!

Sniffing is one of the most natural and important behaviours for dogs. While walks are great for physical exercise, allowing dogs time to stop, sniff, and explore their surroundings is just as important for their mental wellbeing. A dog experiences the world through their nose, and giving them opportunities to sniff helps exercise their brain as well as their paws!

Dogs have an incredible sense of smell, far stronger than our own, and they gather huge amounts of information from scents in their environment. Sniffing allows them to learn about other dogs, people, wildlife, and changes around them. In many ways, it acts like social media for dogs — helping them “read the news” of the world around them!

Benefits of Sniffing

Sniffing provides a wide range of emotional and mental benefits, including:

  • Reducing stress levels

  • Lowering anxiety

  • Providing mental enrichment

  • Increasing confidence in nervous dogs

  • Encouraging natural behaviours

  • Improving overall mental wellbeing

  • Helping dogs feel calmer and more relaxed

Mental stimulation can often tire a dog out more effectively than physical exercise alone. In fact, a 20-minute walk where a dog is allowed to sniff freely can be more beneficial than a fast-paced 60-minute power walk with little opportunity to explore.

Why Outdoor Time Matters

Giving dogs time outside is essential not only for exercise, but also for their emotional health and happiness. Outdoor environments provide constantly changing sights, sounds, smells, and textures that help keep dogs mentally stimulated and engaged.

Spending time outdoors can help dogs:

  • Release built-up energy in a healthy way

  • Prevent boredom and frustration

  • Build confidence through exploration

  • Improve social skills and environmental awareness

  • Support healthy sleep and relaxation afterwards

Even short periods of outdoor enrichment can make a huge difference to a dog’s mood and behaviour throughout the day.

How We Encourage Sniffing and Enrichment at Dexters

Here at Dexters, we make sure every dog gets plenty of opportunities to sniff, explore, and enrich their brains in a safe and positive way. We encourage natural behaviours through:

  • Sniff-filled walks

  • Enrichment activities

  • Snuffle mats

  • Foraging games

  • Sensory play and exploration

By allowing dogs the freedom to use their noses, we help support happier, calmer, and more fulfilled dogs every day.
